Nile monitor in a burnt tree

Wildlife image of monitor

I really like a high-contrasty image. For me, the shadows are as important in the composition and balance of the photograph as the exposed surfaces. Here a nile monitor peeks out of his resting spot - a tree stump that had been burnt by a bushfire. The flat light of an overcast day couldn't have been better with a subtle fallout on the wood texture just below his head. This is a perfect example of how wildlife photography isn't just about the big stuff.
