Lion killing impala

The quintessential moment for any photographer is when all the action and drama culminates into a single frame. On a crisp wintery morning at Chitabe in the Okavango Delta we came across 2 females lions walking with intent and purpose- they were hungry. A succession of events happened pretty quickly, they disappeared and as we tried to relocate them, we found ourselves almost in the middle of the hunt. An impala blasted out of the scrub with a lioness in hot pursuit. Two almighty bounds and the impala was chest deep in water. Lions in the delta have no aversion to water and she followed suit. This was a Goliath vs David scenario, as the larger predator merely pinned the small antelope down with a single paw to the back. Calmly taking her time and gazing around. At this stage cameras were flashing with “busy” signals as they tried to download the bursts of images. I would have expected the lions to drag the impala out of the water before feeding, but no.... they proceeded to feed in the shallows showing very little concern for the crocodiles gathering nearby.
