Swamp leopards

Swamp leopards

In my 30 yrs of working in the Okavango I’ve witnessed the evolution of the elusive swamp leopard. The first few years we would catch momentary glimpses of spots disappearing through the bush and then one year, someone flipped a switch and leopards seemed to appear from everywhere. What did change was that safari lodges started operating all year round and the leopards relaxed with their presence. In that entire time we’ve worked hard to try and change the idea of the swamp, it conjures up images of a steamy, bug infested wetland but the reality is the Okavango is a tapestry of lush green islands, yellowed grasslands that are intersected by the deep blue crystal clear waters of the flood.
