Remarkable story of survival
I’ve been hesitant to upload this image for some time now because it just feeds into the negative narrative out there about hyenas. But this is truly a testament about survival- this hyena, blind in both eyes, severely mauled hind and forequarters survived in a predator rich area for months. In this particular image the hyena had somehow managed to find a carcass and to prevent other hyenas with their phenomenal sense of smell finding it, buried it a hippo mud wallow. The hyena arrived each day to feed, diving below the mud to grab a mouthful and would the climb out and due to its blindness high step all the way back to the tree line. We continued to see this individual on and off for many months after this but never found out what happened once it disappeared.
