Unusual prey for cheetah

Chitabe is an area in Botswana’s Okavango Delta with an unusually high cheetah and giraffe population but, it is still a very unusual moment to document the two species interacting. Cheetah are by design just not built to tackle prey like giraffe. Built for speed, and their preferred method of subduing prey is suffocation, even hunting a young giraffe would pose a major challenge. These four young siblings may have simply been curious rather than setting out with the intent to hunt. We arrived just after they had pulled it down and the giraffes tough hide prevented them from feeding. They wandered off without benefitting from their efforts.  I’ve also posted images of leopard on a giraffe and the area has recorded a small female leopard pulling down a fully grown male giraffe.
